The Work

Generally, the creation or acquisition of a product (or work product) requires an investment of resources, money, or equipment. This investment needs to be planned, and carried out.

The work required to create or acquire a product is usually described as an activity or a task. In this web site, both terms are used interchangeably. Some project management tools use one term or the other or make a distinction between activities and tasks.

In this web site, we will use the term Activity to be the fundamental element of work performed. Activities will be described using a verb to show the activity that needs to be performed

There is a relationship between the work required to create or acquire a product. We will typically show the activities necessary to create a product in a hierarchical representation. The following example demonstrates this relationship:

A Product to create or acquire

  • Prepare to create the product
  • Create the product
  • Quality check the product

A work package provides a management structure to create or acquire one or more products.

See Product Based Planning Example Projects that demonstrate the above structure of activities.
